What is wrong with this picture?

One little bit of very sage advice I have picked up in my international travels is that it pays to pack light.

Can you believe all this stuff?!? My big bags, those lovely flowered ones there on the right, yeah, see them? They weighed 67 and 69 pounds! Between myself and my baggage, I was worth close to 350 lbs. No wonder all those airlines started making you pay extra for extra weight, huh? Because of people like yours truly.

Jessica and I had to pack all that crap through the Salt Lake airport and lug it around LAX, where we eventually-gratefully-checked them for the flight across the Pacific. Our flight from the blessed USA to China was eighteen hours long (with a layover in Korea) and I temporarily forgot about the baggage nightmare. But then I was harshly assaulted by the flowered beasts again, and this time in a foreign country (and after a full 24 hours of travel) that wanted me to drag my poor self and all of my baggage through customs. Later, barely conscious, I stumbled out of the airport with Jessica and the rest of my group and we were greeted by our bus driver, the one who was going to take us all the way to our apartment at our school in Hefei, a quick five hours away. It took eight. Hours. At least he helped us load the bags into the bus.

And no one helped us haul those hideous things up the stairs to our apartment.

SO....my very first and very important travel tip is to pack light folks, pack light.
